Coastal Kitchen - Breakfast the Way it Should Be

429 15th Ave E, Capitol Hill neighborhood

I had the utmost pleasure of visiting Coastal Kitchen this week for an impromptu breakfast with a friend. It was a place I had frequented for some time last summer, only to fall away from it in favor of places closer to the eastside. Now that I am bunking in the city limits, I decided it was high time for a reunion with an old culinary friend.
Not only did they not disappoint, but they exceeded my memories in both taste and impeccable service. Our server was quick to refill water, and willing to stop whatever she was doing to fill in last-minute requests despite having a full section to contend with.

I nearly went for my old stand-by, the Huevos Rancheros. 2 crisp tortillas doused in cheddar cheese and black beans. 2 eggs, dressed with a trio of fresh salsas, adorn the heap of mexi-liciousness. It is a dish whose greatness I have spread far and wide, whose melody of flavors I still long for.
However, this lovely champignon omelet with red peppers and jack cheese called out to me. Given I was dining without my fungi-phobic partner in crime, I seized the chance to relish fluffy eggs stuffed with an assortment of wild mushrooms.
The omelet came with about 2 cups of excellently seasoned hash browns and 4 slices of thick, chewy wheat toast. It was a meal fit for an individual much larger than myself, but with a 12 mile run under my belt I was able to keep up with the best of them.
Might I take a moment to wax poetic over the hash browns? They were perfect. Crispy and crunchy on the top and moistly tender on the inside. Seasoned with paprika, salt, a touch of garlic and some other spices (which in reality could be something as simple as Lawry’s Seasoning Salt), they easily surpassed their typical diner competition. Of course, Coastal Kitchen is not your typical diner.

To date I have not ventured out in the evening hours to sample their frequently rotating dinner menus. Every few months they switch themes and serve dishes specific to a region (we are currently in Italy). I am so enamoured with the breakfasts that to drive out when I cannot get my huevos seems unthinkable! I have made it a point to get there more frequently; it is a perk and reward of living so close now. Based on their breakfasts, I have little doubt dinner would disappoint me.

I just learned that when the Chow Foods people sold Jitterbug (in Wallingford), they decided to keep the rights to their famous Gingerbread Waffles and move them to Coastal Kitchen. Did you notice if they were on the menu?

Yes! On the chalkboard when you walk in the Gingerbread waffles were being featured. I contemplated having them, but they would have left me in a coma for the rest of the day. :)
