more bumbershoot love
In addition to all of the musical highlights that Zee just mentioned [#], there are tons of other types of entertainment scheduled for the four-day Bumbershoot extravaganza. While I admit that the main draw for me is usually the music, this year’s comedy, theater, art, and literary lineup looks particularly strong. Saturday (usually my least favorite day of the festival) ends with this super-fantastic benefit for 826 Seattle starring all of your favorite McSweeney’s people:
Smart: Dave Eggers, Sarah Vowell, Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket), Mike Doughty, and the Transatlantic Orchestra in a Benefit for 826 Seattle [bumbershoot]
I’m glad that they’re having them in a bigger venue this time around. The last time I tried to see Dave Eggers and Sarah Vowell at Bumbershoot, I faced the most gigantic line of all time waiting to get inside the Bagely-Wright Theater and I only got to go inside for about ten minutes.
Yet I’m still in the camp of Bumbershoot lovers. I’ve even made peace with its culture of long lines. You have a month and a half — buy your tickets while they’re still reasonably priced and study the lineup to make your plans to wait for the acts that you really really want to see. Or just show up and you’re bound to run into something great.
In the meantime, please let us know what you’re looking forward to seeing and feel free to share your interpretation of this year’s slogan, “get on the bus”. A dig on the various mass transit projects? A warning about the parking situation? Something else?

The film festival’s consistently strong each year, too, definitely worth checking out.
w00t! Mike Doughty! (Which is probably why “get on the bus” reminds me of a Soul Coughing song which syas “get on to the bus”…)
I’ve only made it into the film festival once. It’s one of the lines that I have yet to understand. I think that the problem is that I never know which series I want to see and it always seems impossible to just drop in for a screening.
