Speaking of poetry, Pulitzer-winning poet Yusef Komunyaaka, of all people, is coming to a little used bookstore in Lake City next Thursday night!

Cat and Cannon Books is up in my neck of the woods, so I checked them out today. It’s a lovely little place, still in its first year of business, and the woman behind the counter — surely the owner — was friendly and sweet. She told me that Yusef Komunyaaka knew her mother, and he offered to come read and sign books at the store while he was out here visiting family.

I think the Cat and Cannon folks may be a little overwhelmed by his generous gesture. They’re trying to get the word out, but they appear a bit new to the world of publicizing author events. It’ll be intimate.

Komunyaaka is amazing. Not only is he a wonderful poet, but he’s got some lucid, thought-provoking things to say about poetry (he’s a Princeton professor) and he’s engaged with the world. A little googling reveals that he’s on the board of the Ghana Education Project and leads US artists to Africa to learn about the AIDS crisis there.

And his name is Komunyakaa, not Komunyaaka. I’m an idjit for not checking that spelling.
