You know, this is why I have trouble being too unkind to Starbucks. Living where I do, I've got countless choices when it comes to satisfying my coffee needs -- but that just isn't the case in many parts of the country. I used to fly in and out of Phoenix, AZ fairly frequently and I was darned grateful for the Starbucks stand at the airport.

(Darn -- I wish I could manage to make it to the meetups. Just a bad day of the week for me. Thanks for thinking of me!)

Speaking of "dull predictability," I moved to Washington from one of those indistinguisable states in the middle of America, also known as "Colorado". I can remember a time where Starbucks was the only game in town if you wanted something other than a straight cup of coffee. They were a gentle introduction to other forms of coffee, especially the twin concepts of a darker roast, and of coffee as "candy." This eventually led people like my husband to coffee books, coffee roasters and a high-falutin' opinion of What Coffee Should Taste Like.

The husband still goes back to Starbucks from time to time -- don't we all? I think the thing about comfort food is, it's supposed to be bland and predictable.

Keep up the reviews, Cat! We were talking about you at the meetup and wondering if you had gotten lost between cafes. Were your ears burning?
