starbucks watch: mermaid meets smithy edition

Along with the usual assortment of blood sugar spiking pastries, I noticed something new in the case at my office Starbucks location: two selections from local donut heros, Top Pot. I have no idea what this means for the universe, or the extent to which these hand-forged donuts have infiltrated the Starbucks Coffee Empire, but I thought that you should know. starbucks.jpgtoppot.jpg

I work at a Tully’s inside the Terry-Lander dorms on the UW campus, and we too carry Top Pot donuts. I don’t know if we’re the only ones nor can I decide whether this is good or bad.

There was an article about this in last Thursday’s Seattle Times. Apparently Howard Schultz, the chairman of Starbucks, got turned on to the doughnuts when he started going to the downtown Top Pot location. (FYI, I logged in to the Seattle Times archive using the bugmenot.com username and password [bugmenot/tfy89edr]. Sweet.)

As much as I dislike Starbuck’s coffee, I’m glad that the Klebeck brothers have been so successful with their doughnuts. They’ve brought many wonderful things to Seattle — Bauhaus Coffee! — and it’s nice to see them doing well.

Now that you mention it, I’ve noticed Top Pot doughnuts at the Health Sciences HFS café. More accessible Top Pot is definitely a dangerous thing.

The Top Pot / Zeitgeist empire has done a great job of creating fantastic spaces for the drinking of coffee and the consumption of high fat snacks. I love the look and feel of all of their cafes. And it’s hard to argue with the doughnuts (and the Ovaltine lattes!)
