get local, get happy

It’s time to fact the fact that the Green Cat is gone for good. To help ease the transition and win your hearts, the new tenants Local Cafe (1514 E Olive Way) have spruced the old digs up and are offering three hours of three dollar happy hour prices. From 3 to 6 pm, stop by for a small plate or two — soups, salads, small pots of cheese — and see if you might have a new favorite spot.

I’m all in favor of supporting local restaurants, but there’s got to be something on the menu I can eat. Especially given the history of this particular location, it seems strange that there isn’t even one vegan option on the menu. The boyfriend and I stopped by to check this place out a while ago, but couldn’t find anything to order. Too bad — they’ve done a nice job of remodeling and I’ve heard really good things about the food.

(While I’m in my Whiny Vegan register, I will also note that Crave is another new restaurant a vegan will leave hungry. After reading several glowing reviews of this place, I took an out-of-town visitor there for lunch. She had a lovely bowl of cream of potato soup with focaccia — my only option was a watercress salad, minus the cheese. Our waiter, who was also vegan, apologized, but couldn’t even bring me a slice of bread because the house focaccia had cheese on it.)

sorry - I hadn’t considered the vegan vacuum caused by the departure of the Green Cat (& I’m vegetarian, so I really should’ve been more aware!)

Mainly, I just feel bad that this new place always seems to be empty after they did so much work to make it look nice. I’m a fan of their breakfast items, but I haven’t taken a close look at their dinner menu. It seems like it rotates a bit; so maybe they’d be amenable to adding vegan options?
