Reposted in its entirety, this item from the seattle livejournal community was too mysterious not to pass along:
f[t] = Sin[t+t Sin[5t1.2]]
this friday the streets of pike and pine will be split by the sonic forces of mathematics. mathematicattack will appear on pike and pine from 11:45pm to 12:30am and on the corner of pine and summit from 11:47pm to 11:56 pm. what you will hear is the sound of mathematical functions. [lj]
Maybe it’s the sonic analog to the visual arts project described in this month’s Wired (“Sine Language” [12.09]) or maybe it’s the sound of high school precalc students mourning the return to regular mathematics. In the event that it’s not a hoax, you’ll know what’s interrupting your regularly-scheduled Friday night adventures in the Pike-Pine corridor.
special added value feature: the metblogs maths team provides this graph of the mysterious function for your enjoyment.

While we’re on the subject of ways to get your online Seattle fix, I thought I’d point out Seattle Stories, an ongoing collaboration of three web developers, the general public, and the city of seattle (figuratively, not governmentally). It’s something of a personal and public oral (again, fig.) history project of the city and its neighborhoods.
They’re right in the middle of a contest — submit your Seattle story for a chance to win $50.

Looking for something to do Thursday night?
Come on out the the lovely Sunset Tavern in beautiful downtown Ballard Thursday evening for a night of red-hot rock’n'roll flavored alt-country with the breathtakingly talented Kim Virant, Doublewide and Lee Rude & the Trainwrecks who are celebrating the release of their new CD. Three great bands for one low cover charge–a mere $5–how can you go wrong?

I’d like to wish myself a happy birthday today.
It amused me to realize that the weather itself was honoring the anniversary of the birth of a native–overcast dawn, sunny morning, hazy at noon, rain in the afternoon and then an overcast dusk.

Yet another neat up-and-coming resource for wired Seattleites, the Seattle Wiki aims to be a community clearinghouse for citizen knowledge. Check it out, share what you know, etc.
Plus, it’s a Wiki, which significantly increases it’s hot new web cred. For at least a couple months.

Coneflowers are in bloom. A butterfly camps out on a chrysanthemum bud.

There’s a food war going on this weekend, and the only people who can possibly benefit are the eaters. Vying with the Taste of Greece (Greek food, Greek music, and “spirited” Greek dancing) are the Bite of Crossroads (musical entertainment, children’s activities, and ethnic food), the Aki Matsuri (Taiko drum, bonsai, and koi workshops, a Japanese flea market, and Japanese food), and the Annual Chicken BBQ (chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, and biscuits).
If you don’t gain at least 5 pounds this week, it’s because you got lost in the maize maze.

So I decided to conclude the long weekend with a trip to Bumbershoot to see the Pixies. We met at the B&O and caught the 8 down to the Seattle Center where we ventured around a large assortment of Pepsi trucks to find the entrance and the will call for Rachel. I shell out my 25 dollars and Rachel ends up with two tickets so she decided to give one of hers away. Too bad, if we had only known. Snap. So we finally get into lines and enter through the gates…the big buzz was whether or not we’d be able to procure wristbands to see the Pixies. I think everyone was feeling a tad on the paranoid side, and I can’t say that I wasn’t quite relieved when we did get wristbands (They eventually ran out fairly early in the day). Then it was time for a little nitrates. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a festival where I didn’t eat some sort of hot dog! Mmm. Walking around people watching was a great bit of fun. We tried to see Harvey Pekar but his show was full, so we headed over to watch some breakdancing. The B Boyz weren’t breakdancing, but they sure were laying around on the floor. It was quite disappointing. We (Rachel, me, Laura Rose, and Justin) then basically decided it was time to head to the bar. We stopped at the Fun House for a little whisky and some good old draft PBR. We actually spent quite a bit of time there and it was fun. If you’re looking for a dive bar, I recommend it. Then we stoppped by some other bar, the 5 something (Rachel help me out) and had a nice time just talking. Then we thought we could rebrave Bumbershoot. After some more food it was time to get in line for the Pixies. They had us walking around with our wristbands in the air like we were some sort of Nazi concert goers. It was really wierd. The crowd was enormous! We got into the arena at around 6 and then proceeded to sit for some time. Built to Spill came on and wasn’t very good (in my opinion) but then Rachel and I decided to shove ourselves through the crowd and got pretty close for the Pixies. Frank Black was really on. It was a great show had someone not hit me in the head rendering unto me a fantastic headache. All in all, it was so worth it to see this legendary band. There was something so magical about hearing an entire audience in unison sing ‘Where is my Mind’, ‘Velouria’, ‘Debaser’, and ‘Wave of Mutilation’. What excited me most (after getting over my snobbery) was that there were people of all ages gathering together to mesh into one body to celebrate the music of one amazing musical group. Oh yah, I met some cool people in the crowd. Next year maybe I’ll do a little surfing.

I work down by Boeing Field which is great for me since I love airplanes and am happy to spend my breaks in the parking lot watching planes take off and land. My workload is currently quite demanding so I end up spending a lot of time down there and I’ve noticed that while the traffic these days isn’t anything like it was when there were hundreds, if not thousands, of employees at Plant 2 around the clock, there’s still quite a bit of traffic.
Not today, though. Today there was so little traffic that I could have easily jaywalked East Marginal Way without having to fear for my safety, if I hadn’t taken that vow of no jaywalking after nearly getting myself killed back in June. The quiet was somewhat unsettling at first but as I made my way across the parking lot to my office I realized that I liked it–there’s something truly special about the way one minor change in the usual atmosphere can make you feel as if you’ve stepped into a whole new world.

In today’s avoidance of Bumbershoot, I spent my late morning at Value Village up on Capital Hill. It’s funny how each Value Village is different from each other one. Obviously there’s going to be different items at each location but it seems to me that different stores just seem to be better for different itesm. For example, Capital Hill always has great clothes, Burien has great household furnishings. Even when I don’t end up bringing anything home, I always enjoy my wanders through VV.
Incidentally, Monday, Sept 6th, Value Village is having one of their “half off everything” sales. New items are excluded, as usual, but I looked over their new Halloween stock today and the prices are AMAZING.
