Bumbershoot, a little breakdancing and some beer

So I decided to conclude the long weekend with a trip to Bumbershoot to see the Pixies. We met at the B&O and caught the 8 down to the Seattle Center where we ventured around a large assortment of Pepsi trucks to find the entrance and the will call for Rachel. I shell out my 25 dollars and Rachel ends up with two tickets so she decided to give one of hers away. Too bad, if we had only known. Snap. So we finally get into lines and enter through the gates…the big buzz was whether or not we’d be able to procure wristbands to see the Pixies. I think everyone was feeling a tad on the paranoid side, and I can’t say that I wasn’t quite relieved when we did get wristbands (They eventually ran out fairly early in the day). Then it was time for a little nitrates. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a festival where I didn’t eat some sort of hot dog! Mmm. Walking around people watching was a great bit of fun. We tried to see Harvey Pekar but his show was full, so we headed over to watch some breakdancing. The B Boyz weren’t breakdancing, but they sure were laying around on the floor. It was quite disappointing. We (Rachel, me, Laura Rose, and Justin) then basically decided it was time to head to the bar. We stopped at the Fun House for a little whisky and some good old draft PBR. We actually spent quite a bit of time there and it was fun. If you’re looking for a dive bar, I recommend it. Then we stoppped by some other bar, the 5 something (Rachel help me out) and had a nice time just talking. Then we thought we could rebrave Bumbershoot. After some more food it was time to get in line for the Pixies. They had us walking around with our wristbands in the air like we were some sort of Nazi concert goers. It was really wierd. The crowd was enormous! We got into the arena at around 6 and then proceeded to sit for some time. Built to Spill came on and wasn’t very good (in my opinion) but then Rachel and I decided to shove ourselves through the crowd and got pretty close for the Pixies. Frank Black was really on. It was a great show had someone not hit me in the head rendering unto me a fantastic headache. All in all, it was so worth it to see this legendary band. There was something so magical about hearing an entire audience in unison sing ‘Where is my Mind’, ‘Velouria’, ‘Debaser’, and ‘Wave of Mutilation’. What excited me most (after getting over my snobbery) was that there were people of all ages gathering together to mesh into one body to celebrate the music of one amazing musical group. Oh yah, I met some cool people in the crowd. Next year maybe I’ll do a little surfing.
