I have to second the minus marks for Azteca. Their food seems uninspired and cheap, especially for the cost (order one of their salads for a good example of this….Seven dollars for iceburg lettuce and ground beef? I don’t think so!) And for a supposed middle level Mexican restaurant to NOT have a decent mole is one of the biggest curiousities about the place.
I agree for that Taqueria Express is worth the trip, and have found a soft spot for Tia Lou’s in Belltown (even though the food is only marginally better than Azteca’s, I just like their patio and the fact that I met my partner there).
Azteca might not be the perfect sampling of Mexican for anyone who’s spent time closer to Mexico. The closest I’ve found to satisfy my Mexican food cravings is either Luisa’s in Greenwood or Rosita’s at Greenlake. Gordito’s in Greenwood is also good.
I have no idea why so many good Mexican restaurants are in such close proximity to one another.

Azteca makes my poor mother weep, that place is a chain and a suckie one at that. I’m a beaner from Southern California and Azteca just doesn’t cut it, for me at least.
For decent Mexican food you should try Mama’s kitchen in Belltown, it’s the closest I’ve found to So-Cal cooking. Taqueria Express or Torrero’s on Broadway are decent as well. If you want the best Mexican food go way south end, think Georgetown, find a place with the cheapest tacos and beer. I guarantee it will be fucking awesome.

Azteca was semi-adequate Tex-Mex when I moved to Seattle 10 years ago. It’s gone seriously downhill since. The other spots referenced in the other entries are all tasty, though my personal favorites for Tex-Mex type food are El Sombrero in Columbia City and the Torero’s near Fred Meyer in Renton (the former’s margaritas are AWESOME). There are always little taqueria trucks and buses, many of which offer very tasty taqueria fare, but they are always moving, so I can’t recommend any specifically. The closest thing to them that stays in one place is Taqueria El Rinconsito – I like the one fairly close to the airport. And their hours are great (open late). For FANTASTIC Mexican food (NOT Tex-mex), you have to drive to Centralia. There’s a small free-standing restaurant called La Tarasca; it’s on the left just past the funky house with all the junkyard-style artwork (main Centralia exit – heading S on I-5 from Seattle). A lady and her daughters run the place, and it’s the best Mexican food I’ve found North of Central California (and I’ve looked long and hard).
